How to Specify FINOAK Atelier Engineered Wood
A considered engineered wood specification goes beyond choosing a colour. Review the oak wear layer, board format, surface finish, construction, locking system and installation method, as well as the subfloor, underfloor heating requirements, maintenance guidance and warranty.
| Technical Criterion | What to Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
OAK
Oak Wear Layer
|
Check whether the selected board has a 3 mm or 4 mm European sawn oak wear layer, as stated in its product specification. | The real oak surface gives the floor its natural character. Wear-layer thickness is also relevant when assessing the product’s lifespan and refinishing options. |
|
MM
Board Format
|
FINOAK Atelier formats include 14/3 × 190 × 1900 mm, 15/4 × 190 × 1900 mm and 15/4 × 260 × 2200 mm. The unfinished range also includes herringbone boards at 15/4 × 125 × 600 mm. | Board dimensions affect quantities, floor build-up, transitions and the finished layout. Confirm the format for the exact colour and finish being specified. |
|
3PLY
Construction
|
Review the product’s layered construction: European oak wear layer, poplar core and poplar backing. | The engineered construction combines a real oak surface with cross-layered components designed to support dimensional stability. |
|
UV
Surface Finish
|
Confirm whether the board is pre-finished or unfinished and check the finish specified for the selected product, such as a brushed UV-lacquer option. | The finish affects the floor’s appearance, surface protection and care requirements. Use the maintenance guidance for that finish. |
|
5G
Locking System
|
FINOAK Atelier uses the Välinge 5G locking system. Check the installation guide for the approved joining method. | The locking system supports floating installation. If the floor is glued down, adhesive should be applied to the subfloor, not into the click joints. |
|
↔
Installation Method
|
Confirm whether the project calls for a floating installation or a glue-down installation. For glue-down work, check the approved flexible adhesive and subfloor preparation requirements. | The installation method affects the feel of the completed floor, acoustic performance and preparation needed before installation. |
|
UFH
Underfloor Heating
|
Confirm that the heating system and installation conditions comply with the FINOAK Atelier guidance. Check operating requirements before installation. | Wood responds to changes in temperature and humidity. Following the product guidance helps support the performance of the floor and the heating system. |
|
CARE
Care & Refinishing
|
Check the maintenance instructions for the selected surface finish. Ask a qualified flooring professional to assess the floor before sanding or refinishing. | Appropriate cleaning and care help protect the surface. The genuine oak wear layer can allow for refinishing, subject to the product and its condition. |
|
✓
Warranty
|
Review the 25-year structural warranty and check its conditions, exclusions, care requirements and intended use. | Warranty terms clarify what is covered and the installation and maintenance conditions that apply. View FINOak warranty information . |
Before Specifying an Engineered Wood Floor
Review the selected product’s technical specification sheet, installation guide, warranty and maintenance instructions before finalising the specification. Check the subfloor, installation method, expansion requirements and any underfloor heating conditions with the flooring professional responsible for the project.
What Should You Consider When Choosing Engineered Wood Flooring?
FINOAK Atelier combines a real European sawn oak wear layer with a multi-layer poplar construction. When comparing engineered wood floors, consider the board format, wear-layer thickness, finish, installation requirements and care instructions alongside the colour and grain.
For architects, interior designers, developers, contractors and homeowners, these details help match the flooring to the project, installation conditions and intended use.
Understanding FINOAK Atelier Construction
FINOAK Atelier has a three-layer construction comprising a European oak top layer, poplar core and poplar backing. The oak wear layer is available in 3 mm and 4 mm options, depending on the selected board format. The product specification confirms the construction and dimensions for each option.
Choosing the Right Board Format
Pre-finished FINOAK Atelier boards are available in formats including 14/3 × 190 × 1900 mm, 15/4 × 190 × 1900 mm and 15/4 × 260 × 2200 mm. The unfinished range also includes herringbone boards at 15/4 × 125 × 600 mm, as well as plank formats. Confirm the dimensions of the selected product before calculating quantities or planning transitions.
Floating or Glue-Down Installation
FINOAK Atelier can be installed as a floating floor using its Välinge 5G locking system or as a glue-down floor, depending on the project requirements. Glue-down installation requires a suitable, flexible adhesive and a level, dry, properly prepared subfloor. Apply adhesive to the subfloor rather than into the click joints.
For floating installations, use the specified underlay and follow the installation guide for expansion gaps. Always check the current product instructions before work begins.
Surface Finishes and Ongoing Care
FINOAK Atelier includes pre-finished and unfinished options, with brushed UV-lacquer finishes available on selected products. The selected finish determines the appropriate cleaning and maintenance routine. Follow the relevant FINfloor care guidance and use products recommended for that surface.
The genuine oak wear layer can allow the floor to be sanded and refinished over time. Ask a qualified flooring professional to assess the floor and confirm what is appropriate for the selected product.
Underfloor Heating and Site Conditions
FINOAK Atelier can be used with underfloor heating when installed in line with the product guidance. Confirm the heating system, operating conditions and installation requirements before specifying the floor. Subfloor preparation, moisture management and room conditions should also be checked before installation.
Review the Complete Flooring System
The oak boards are one part of a successful installation. Subfloor preparation, moisture barriers, underlay or adhesive, expansion allowances, transitions, stair details and maintenance all contribute to the finished result. Consider these elements together when preparing the flooring specification.
